In today’s Morning Briefing, Lincoln Police Chief Jeff Bliemeister was able to provide an update on the condition of Investigator Mario Herrera, who was shot last week while trying to capture Felipe Vazquez near 33rd & Vine Street.
“Mario has undergone five different surgeries. The most recent surgeries, both of which occurred yesterday, are focused on the care of his abdomen and controlling ongoing bleeding. There is reason for optimism,” Bliemeister said.
In his remarks, Chief Bliemeister also commended the immediate response to the shooting.
“I want to acknowledge the immediate response from paramedics with Lincoln Fire and Rescue. After Mario was shot, there was care provided by officers at the scene but very rapidly the expertise from Lincoln Fire and Rescue was there. They then carried on with the continuum of care to Bryan Hospital.”
Over the weekend, Investigator Herrera was transferred from a Lincoln Hospital to UNMC in Omaha, where he remains in “extremely critical” condition.
