1 min read

In a press release Tuesday, Lincoln Police said the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office cited Benjamin Rieker for 3rd-degree assault after an investigation.

Rieker, a Lincoln Police officer at the time, was suspected of using excessive force while working in an off-duty capacity on October 31st, 2020. Lincoln Police did not immediately comment on specifics.

After receiving complaints and reviewing video, then-Chief Jeff Bliemeister ordered an investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs unit on November 12th, 2020. The investigation revealed policy violations and a potentially criminal offense.

On November 19th, 2020, Chief Bliemeister requested that the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office conduct an independent criminal investigation. Rieker was placed on a 30-day unpaid leave during this process.

At the conclusion of the investigation, LSO investigators cited Rieker for 3rd-degree assault, a misdemeanor. Rieker resigned from the police department on January 26th, 2021.
